About The Artist

….Loving Life in the Low Country

Cassandra Gillens resides in the Low Country of South Carolina, an area she cherishes.  Being closely connected with the people and culture of this beautiful and historic land, the artist’s paintings depict some of her fondest memories as a child and good old Southern living.

Gillens is very creative and is a self-taught artist.  Born and educated in Boston, Massachusetts, her earliest memories are of drawing with colored chalks as a child.  The artist’s most vivid memories of her visits to South Carolina moved her to paint visions of the Low Country’s comforting Southern culture.  Gillens dreamed of one day returning to the place that won her heart and spirit.  When finally realizing her dream, the artist became closely connected with the people and culture she so loves.

Gillens’ paintings reflect her love of the Low Country with vivid colors of the Southern seasons and images of the South and the charm it exudes.  Everyday life becomes a celebration with her talent for portraying a culture that is filled with warmth and a long heritage of close families, gentle personalities, wonderful neighbors, and all the things that make her beloved land so special.

The artist’s works are widely collected throughout the United States and in Europe.  Gillens and her art have been featured in many newspapers and also in prestigious magazines such as Southern Living, along with many local and regional publications.  United Airlines has showcased her work in their in-flight magazine.  Gillens’ art was also chosen to be featured in the film, “Nights in Rodanthe.”

Gillens’ original works are represented by several well-known galleries in South Carolina and North Carolina.  She has been recognized for her work for Habitat for Humanity, Rotary Club of the Low Country, and Literacy of the Low Country in Beaufort, where she resides.  Gillens has also been honored for her work with the Zenith Community Art Foundation in Washington, D.C., the South Carolina Medical Center in Charleston, the Harvey Gantt Center in Charlotte (N. C.), and The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach.  Gillens has been honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for her outstanding community service.

Visit the Low Country through Cassandra Gillens’ wonderful art and be enchanted by the people and culture that she so loves.
